IN MONTEM SANCTUM

January 5-10, 2025

Purpose

To provide young men (18-25) an opportunity to experience the joy of an authentic Christian life in the beauty of God’s creation — an experience of light and truth in His holy mountain, in Winter.

All men desire strength, but each man must first know the source of his strength -- God, who sends forth his light and his truth to lead us close to him in his Holy Mountain (Psalm 42). In Montem Sanctum will be an adventure and challenge, both physically and spiritually demanding.

Each day will be centered around Mass, meditation, and talks, meant to open the heart to God through the beauty of his creation.

Participants will learn many important principles of winter survival such as proper layering, hydration, and snow travel. They will ski the fresh powder of the Uinta Mountains backcountry, build and sleep in snow huts, and develop a deeper relationship with God.

Open to men ages 18-25 ready to challenge themselves to growth, this trip is not for the faint of heart.

Participants should be in good physical condition and some skiing experience is strongly recommended. Camaraderie shared in adversity is often the most powerful kind and participants will have many opportunities to share this camaraderie with the chaplain, seminarian, other participants, and the COR guides who will be ensuring safety and fun in this epic adventure in God’s mountains.

Program Itinerary

IMS is a six-day experience for men age 18-25, spent learning the basics of winter travel and survival including snowshoeing, skiing, and building snow huts in the Uinta Mountains of Utah.

Due to the intensity of the activities the number of participants will be limited to 11.

Participants should be aware that prior downhill skiing experience is necessary or at least highly recommended and good physical fitness is necessary, as this will be a strenuous adventure.

Are You Crazy? A Note on Safety

This trip is run by St. John Bosco Camps, but we are not doing it alone. We have once again teamed up with COR Expeditions who will be providing world class training, expertise, and guidance throughout the entire trip.

COR Expeditions is a Catholic wilderness expeditions company which SJBC has worked with for now going on three years for our wilderness trip in Wyoming (Sursum Corda). They offer a very safe, thorough, and professional backcountry experience.

Cost

Each participant will pay $995 dollars.

Itinerary

Participants will fly into Salt Lake City on Jan. 5th before 11:00am to be picked up by COR and ride to the base camp (travel time ~2hrs). Winter travel in the backcountry will begin the next day Jan. 6th and end Jan 9th (4 days 3 nights in the backcountry). Participants will be dropped off at the airport on Jan 10th and are free to fly out after 2:00 PM.
